Nautilus Filter® vs. Voker Holding Tank Vent Filter

Nautilus Filter® vs. Voker Holding Tank Vent Filter

, by Joseph Koreis, 14 min reading time

Voker uses a conventional disposable carbon-filter approach, while Nautilus is designed as the higher-performance odor-removal system. Nautilus combines the refillable Five-Chamber Carbon Helix® architecture, specialized dual-carbon media, substantially longer air-to-carbon contact time, strong vent airflow, and a built-in silicone pump-out bypass valve. The comparison is therefore about odor-removal performance and system design as well as refillability and long-term ownership cost.

How the Voker Vent Filter Works

Voker uses a hard-packed activated-carbon bed in a conventional single-tube design. The filter is positioned as a simple annual replacement rather than a refillable product. Current manufacturer pricing is $62.99 for the common 3/4-inch GHT replacement filter and $74.99 for the corresponding new-installation kit.

Why that matters for odor performance: activated carbon works by adsorbing odor compounds as the vent gas passes across the media. By forcing the gas through five helical carbon chambers rather than a short straight-through bed, Nautilus provides substantially more contact time for adsorption. That longer contact time is the engineering basis for describing Nautilus as the higher-performing odor-removal design; the measured claim remains contact time, not a claim that odor removal or service life is 5× or 6× greater.

How the Nautilus Filter® Works

The Nautilus Filter® PRO and OEM use five helical carbon chambers and are refilled rather than discarded. The PRO provides more than 6× and the OEM more than 5× the air-to-carbon contact time of a conventional single-chamber design. Both use a blend of two specialized activated carbons targeting sewer-type odors and H₂S.

Both Nautilus models also include the silicone pump-out bypass valve. If an aggressive pump-out creates excessive vacuum, the valve admits additional air into the holding tank to help prevent tank deformation or collapse. Normal outgoing holding-tank vent gases remain directed through the carbon media.

Performance advantage: The Nautilus comparison is not based on refillability alone. Its longer carbon contact path, specialized dual-carbon media, and lower airflow restriction are all intended to improve real-world odor control compared with conventional short-path single-chamber filters, while the bypass valve adds protection during aggressive pump-outs.

The Real Cost Difference Over Time

Using current manufacturer pricing for the common 3/4-inch GHT configuration, the Voker replacement filter is $62.99 and the corresponding new-installation kit is $74.99. Over three seasons, one installation kit plus two replacement filters totals approximately $200.97.

A Nautilus Filter® OEM totals approximately $207 over three seasons with two annual refills, and a PRO approximately $227. At these current manufacturer prices, Voker is slightly lower in three-season purchase cost, while Nautilus is differentiated by its higher-performance odor-removal architecture, refillability, substantially longer air-to-carbon contact time, specialized dual-carbon media, and pump-out bypass protection.

Which Model Fits the Application?

·       You prefer a simple annual disposable replacement → Voker.

·       You have a compatible OEM-style bracket and want a refillable direct-fit filter with a pump-out bypass valve → Nautilus Filter® OEM.

·       You have room for the larger housing and want the larger carbon load and minimum airflow restriction → Nautilus Filter® PRO.

FAQ

Is the Voker holding-tank vent filter refillable?

No. Voker markets the marine holding-tank filter as an annual disposable replacement.

Will a Nautilus Filter® fit where a Voker filter is installed?

Yes, depending on the installation. The Nautilus Filter® OEM is designed around the same common OEM bracket

Is a disposable filter inherently worse than a refillable filter?

No. The ownership model is different. Disposable filters emphasize simple replacement; refillable filters retain the housing and replace only the media. The Nautilus system additionally uses the Carbon Helix® geometry, specialized dual-carbon media, and a pump-out bypass valve.

Voker is a straightforward U.S.-made annual replacement filter. Nautilus is designed to provide higher odor-removal performance through substantially increased air-to-carbon contact time and specialized dual-carbon media, while also providing refillability and pump-out vacuum protection.

The OEM model brings those performance advantages to the direct-fit format; the PRO adds the larger carbon load, more than 6× contact time, and near-zero airflow restriction when space allows
